It’s a rest day! It was a great day to not be riding as it rained hard for a good part of the afternoon.
Sleeping in, as good as it sounds, just doesn’t happen. Our clocks are wound to get up and get moving. Walking down the hall for breakfast, even though it’s nothing fancy, is really comfortable. We were up at 6am and did the breakfast thing and discussed what we needed to get done today.
Lube and clean our bike chains, outside
Walmart for some Advil and a some dinner
Amish grocery store to check it out and have lunch

After breakfast Kim and I each got lost in our laptops and cellphone catching up on the news and social media. I think I like not knowing what’s going on in the rest of the world. Besides that, I continue to not appreciate the media telling me what to think and wish I was just given the real, honest information and let me decide what to think about. Everything on the 24-hour news is so slanted and distasteful, to me.
Kim and rode our bikes, without or saddlebags to the Amish grocery store and found they had a deli. Fried bologna is big out here and I love it. When I was a kid, we’d fry up bologna and put it on a piece of toast. So, I ordered a fried bologna with cheese, mustard and pickles for the deli and Kim ordered a fried ham and cheese sandwich. Delicious!
From the Amish grocery store we rode across the highway to Walmart to pick up something for dinner and Advil. I watched our bikes while Kim did the shopping. A young man came up to me, pushing his bicycle, and offered me $5 to watch his bike while he went in to grab a couple things. I said I’d do it for nothing. He leaved his bike next to mine and went in. Kim came back with a couple plastic back of groceries and we waited for about another 5 minutes for the young man to come back and claim his bike. He again offered me $5 for watching his bike and just said I was happy to do it for nothing.
I strapped the 2 bags, one on each side of my handlebars and we made the trek back to the hotel. It was supposed to rain, so I quickly ran each of our bikes out to the parking lot, with a can of chain lube and a rag, to clean up our chains. Soon after I brought our bikes back into our room it rained cats & dogs.
Kim and I reviewed our options for places to stay going through the Appalachian’s and camping just isn’t sounding as exciting anymore, so we looked for an alternative route. We’ve decided to off the TransAm grid and reroute ourselves through the remainder of Kentucky and into western Virginia and take a more southerly route and hook back up with the TransAm in Christiansburg, VA, at the start of our last map, #12.
The picture is from our unplanned stop at he bike store in Danville on Sunday and Kim is now holstered up with dog (pepper) spray.
